Whyalla has long been known for its shipyards, and its Maritime Museum is a major draw. The enormous HMAS Whyalla, a World War II minesweeper, stands on the grounds of the museum. With attractions for young and old, the museum covers more than just the maritime industry. Yes, there is plenty about shipbuilding, but there's also information about sea life and even Aboriginal myths and legends relating to the sea.

You can take a walk to the Hummock Hill Lookout. This is a fun hike, not too demanding, and will give you great views across the area. From the top, you'll be able to see a panoramic view that sweeps over Whyalla steelworks, the beach, the marina and the city. For a longer hike, try the Freycinet Trail, which runs for 12 km along Fitzgerald Bay. You'll enjoy great views, and there are plenty of spots along the way for a picnic. Be sure to bring enough water and food, though, as you won't be able to buy anything along the way.
