What to do and see in Fredericia
Fredericia is a picture-perfect town right in the heart of Denmark. With its charming architecture, beautiful green surroundings and authentic Danish cuisine, this is an ideal spot for a holiday. Fredericia attracts visitors who want to see the true Denmark and discover more of what this fascinating country has to offer. With car hire in Fredericia, you can explore the town and the national parks that surround it or set off on a grand road trip that you'll never forget!
What makes Fredericia so special? Start with its location, inside Denmark's largest nature park. Lillebaelt stretches over land and sea. It is home to one of the world's densest populations of porpoises, and you can take a sightseeing boat trip to see these friendly creatures at play. There are also plenty of hiking trails and cycling paths, as well as a whole range of water-based activities. From stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking to diving and snorkelling, you'll never get bored as you explore this marvellous natural wonder.
The Fredericia Ramparts are one of the town's most famous attractions. This was once a fortress town, and today its ramparts are the best-preserved in Northern Europe. The moats, cannons, turrets and walls can all be explored. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time as you take a walk around the fortifications. Kids will love the chance to scramble up the Ramparts, which make the most magnificent playground.
You might not think of Denmark as a destination for a beach holiday – but after a trip to Osterstrand, you're sure to change your mind! This blue flag beach is right in the heart of the city, so it's popular with both locals and visitors. Laid-back bars, a beach volleyball court and exercise equipment will all keep you busy if you don't want to take a dip. The "Mermaid Flutes", a number of poles in the water linked together by a rope, provide a safe environment for young children to go swimming.
Take advantage of car or van hire in Fredericia to visit Jelling, approximately 30 km away. This quiet town is home to some of the best Viking artefacts in the world. Its burial mounds and rune stones are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One rune stone here, erected by King Harald Bluetooth in 965, features the first known mention of the name Denmark. Danes often come here for a visit, as it is often regarded as the country's birthplace.
Driving in Fredericia
With a population of just 50,000, Fredericia does not have much of a rush hour. Traffic is not usually a problem, and the town has plenty of parking spots. To use the free parking spaces in blue zones, ensure that your car is equipped with a blue parking disc. These are common in both Denmark and other European countries.
You will find unlimited free parking at the Norgesgade Nord and Norgesgade Syd car parks, as well as by Oldenborggade. There is also free parking available elsewhere in the town, but with a time limit of 3 hours. If you use a paid parking spot, you can pay with a credit card, mobile phone app or a Danish parking app. Several different apps are available for use. Do not park in a restricted area, as Denmark's road rules are very strict. There are no wheel clamps here, and the authorities act quickly to tow vehicles.
If you are taking a longer road trip across Denmark, you will find an excellent network of well-maintained roads. There are service stations every 50 km on the highways. Be aware that no emergency phones can be found on the country's highways, so ensure you have a charged mobile with you in case you need it.
In Denmark, you are legally obliged to keep your headlights on at all times. This law is in effect 24 hours a day, in all seasons and weather conditions. Some newer cars in Denmark are fitted with lights that can never be turned off. If you have an older vehicle, you will have to remember to turn them on and off manually.
There is no legal requirement for winter tyres, but many drivers prefer to use them. You can expect snow in Fredericia from early December until early March, with the most snow falling in January. If you're visiting in the winter, be prepared to drive in bad weather. The roads are regularly cleared and gritted to keep motorists safe. Highways and larger roads are maintained more often than smaller country roads. You might prefer to stick to the highway on snowy days just to be on the safe side.
In general, Denmark does not have a culture of road rage or aggressive driving, although you may be unlucky enough to encounter some exceptions! You should use your horn as infrequently as possible, as it is not common here and may startle other drivers.
