Driving in Rovaniemi

Due to the region's extreme weather, winter tires with a minimum tread depth of 3mm are mandatory between 1 November and 31 March or outside these dates if adverse weather conditions are present.

In winter, you must always check the weather forecast at your destination before setting off. If you plan to drive outside Rovaniemi, make a note of the location of rest areas and petrol stations. Also, check your planned route with locals for up-to-date advice since online maps or GPS apps don't always show the safest route. Specifically, ask about whether the roads you plan on driving are salted or plowed.

Elk, deer and reindeer are often found on Lapland's roads, so be vigilant to avoid hitting them. These animals are most active in the autumn and during the hours around dusk and dawn. In rural areas, pedestrians may be on the roads, especially on the left side.

On other roads, like roads 78 and 79, which take you north and south of Rovaniemi into Lapland's wilderness, the speed limit is 80 km/h.
