What to do and see in Figari

Figari is a small Corsican village. You can make it your base, using it as a chance to explore nearby towns like Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio. With car or van hire in Figari, it's easy to get around, spending your days exploring the magical island of Corsica. Beaches, mountains and beautiful cities all make this one of the most attractive destinations in France - and it's all yours to discover.

Use car hire in Figari to visit Porto-Vecchio, known as one of Corsica's most glamorous cities. The old town is most notable for its impressive citadel, sitting high on a hill. This 16th-century citadel is built in the Genoese style. Today, its narrow streets are lined with cafés, restaurants and charming little shops. By the marina, you'll find the more modern side of the city. Admire the impressive yachts and enjoy ice cream as you stroll along the seafront. The views here are of the sea and the mountains and paint a beautiful picture of this Mediterranean island.

Figari is close to Palombaggia, which many consider to be the most beautiful beach on the island. Whether or not you agree, you'll find that the beach is a playground for the entire family. Stretch out on the white sand, soaking up the glorious Mediterranean sunshine, or venture out into the water. The sea here is crystal-clear, making it perfect for snorkelling. Strap on your mask and head out to the red rocks, where you'll be able to spot colourful little fish darting around. The water here remains warm for several months and is swimmable until the end of October. Close to the beach, it is very shallow, so it's a good spot for kids to go for a dip.

There are other wonderful beaches to explore nearby, too. Tamaricciu is known for its impressive boulders, which you can use as a backdrop for more snorkelling fun. Santa Giulia is a popular destination for all kinds of water activities, including kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. There are also some time coves along the coast, giving you plenty of opportunities to decide on your personal favourite Corsican beach.

Another great destination for a day trip is Bonifacio, with its dramatic white limestone cliffs and medieval fortifications. Take the King of Aragón's staircase, a remarkable set of stairs carved into the cliff face. This is a unique experience that offers spectacular views - but if you're scared of heights, it's best to give it a miss! These 189 steps are steep and uneven, running all the way down the cliffside. They were originally built to allow locals to reach a spot to collect fresh water. Today, they're more of a tourist attraction, and they're an ideal spot to get your adrenaline pumping.

Driving in Figari

In Figari, like in most villages in Corsica, you'll find a speed limit of 30 km/h. Speed bumps are very common in Corsican villages, so make sure you respect the speed limit. When you visit a city with a historic centre, like Porto-Vecchio, you'll find it impossible to drive in the old town. Leave your car on the outskirts and continue on foot, as the narrow cobbled streets are not designed for motor vehicles.

All the beaches in this area have free car parks. Some of them are badly marked and a little chaotic, so finding a space can be an adventure! In the summer months, make sure you get to the beach car park very early. If you arrive at midday, it will be a challenge to find a space.

Corsica is a very mountainous island, and most of its roads have dramatic curves. The good news is that this leads to some truly stunning views. The bad news is that you'll have to remain attentive and avoid driving at night. Roads here are not generally as narrow as you'll find on other Mediterranean islands. However, in the summer months, when coach trips are common, you'll find overtaking is sometimes a bit of a challenge.

You're likely to see large potholes in some areas, but in general, the roads are well-maintained. Potholes are most common on access roads to isolated beaches. You'll have to take these roads very slowly. A 4WD vehicle is not necessary - these roads are usually paved but in poor condition.

When driving in Corsica, it's common to find yourself sharing the road with animals. Cows, donkeys, pigs and goats all seem to wander the island without a care in the world. Sometimes you'll be stuck behind a herd of cows being led by a farmer; at other times, the animals seem to come out of nowhere. Take it easy and let them cross the road at their own pace. These are all stubborn animals, and they don't generally fear vehicles. If you honk your horn at them, they may try to attack your car.
