Metz is another fortified place where the legacy left by its military history can still be seen today in the remains of its defensive walls; a 13th-century bridge castle and buildings that were once barracks that have been regenerated as residential accommodation. Metz has innumerable churches, not least the cathedral of St Stephen. It also has a branch of the Pompidou Centre, displaying modern art.
