Schifflange is a small town less than 20 km from Luxembourg's centre. As a result, it grew as both a commuter town and industrial site with links to neighbouring France. The town itself was formed in 1876 when it was separated from the larger Esch-sur-Alzette commune, often known as Esch. Steelworks have been operational in the area since 1871 and remain important to Luxembourg's steel industry along with neighbouring Rodange.

Schifflange is a well-placed town located at the crossroads of two major motorways, the A4 and A13. These provide convenient travel to all major towns in the Red Lands region, as well as swift connections to both Luxembourg City and the French, German and Belgian borders.

The A4 motorway is a 16.3 km route that connects Luxembourg City with Esch via Schifflange. It mostly consists of a two-lane dual-carriageway. The A13 spans the breadth of Luxembourg from west to east, connecting Bascharage near the Belgian and French borders with Schengen on the German border. This motorway also predominantly consists of two-lane dual-carriageways. Both motorways offer access via roundabouts and junctions to Schifflange by joining the regional 168 and 169 roads.

Motorway speeds in Schifflange and Luxembourg are variable. They can reach up to 130 km/h. However, these are reduced during wet weather to 110 km/h and during hot summers to 90 km/h.
